Tooltip selector mat-tooltip not working

Tooltips should work with both mat-tooltip and matTooltip per documentation

What is the current behavior?

Tooltips only work for matTooltip

Which versions of Angular, Material, OS, TypeScript, browsers are affected?

Angular 5.0.5, Material 5.0.0-rc0
Both firefox and chrome, I would assume all browsers as it doesn't seem like angular is compiling the directive properly.
