The android app takes a long while to show sent/received messages

I'll make a video to showcase the issue when I get the time, but the problem is as follows - when a message is sent or received it's not immediately shown.

I.e. when multiple images are sent in a quick succession, they will be sent but they will only be shown after a few seconds. This lack of feedback is very confusing, as it makes you think that the messages were never sent.

A similar issue occurs when a message is received. A notification will show up, but when the app opens, assuming it doesn't have to load the whole conversation, it will take it's time to actually load the message, all the while showing the "new message" banner at the top.

App version: Zulip v25.6.120 on OnePlus 6T.

@zingmars one thing that you mentioned stands out -- are you sending large image files in your tests? Generally, that's a bad test case for general message sending performance since that's going to be dominated by the special code paths related to uploading and downloading image files (and your network's performance). If so, we should at least adjust the title to reflect that.

That's a fair point. The pictures I sent we're around 3MiB (phone's camera), so it could've been that.

I think these are actually two quite independent issues.

I've just filed #3598 for this part. I think what's happening is we have the message, but not yet the image contents, and we're not showing a good placeholder for the image.

And #3599 for this one. This is partly a consequence of our app's being built on React Native, together with not yet having done anything sophisticated to deal with it. I'd been aware of it as a consequence of the design of the app, but it's certainly something we'd like to fix and it seems we hadn't had an issue describing it... so now we do!
