This is a partial revert (for the non-socket case only) of the upstream changes that caused the aforementioned issue. (this and the previous 3 commits)
I'm aware that this is not the proper way to solve the issue, and because of that this PR is not something that can be pushed upstream. It's a quick and relatively clean fix that should not cause any side effects (the changes affect only the case when the conditions for the aforementioned issue are met), but I understand if this PR will not be merged.
