is the note warning of DPUB implementations still accurate?

On the one hand, dpub 1.1 is nearing REC. On the other, "close to non-existent" seems a bit harsh these days.

@pkra would you suggest this be updated to specifically call out "on the web" - because that was the intent of this note. That many of these dpub roles aren't actually supported for use in standard websites. at least, not at the time that note was written.

I think that the note no longer reflects reality. I just did a quick test with maybe a dozen landmark/section roles using NVDA and JAWS - they both surfaced them (with some variation). IIRC from the long discussion around the DPUB link roles those work, too.

I built a naive test file from the examples in the spec, https://codepen.io/pkra/pen/xbxJRda?editors=1000

I gave it a quick run using NVDA and JAWS on Chrome. Landmark roles seem to generally be part of landmark navigation. There are differences how exactly they're announced (named vs not named). NVDA doesn't indicate the roles, JAWS sometimes does. I didn't check what can be configured.

Section roles are announced less (like sections in general?). Links generally come out as links; I don't know if you can expose their dpub roles. Footnotes and pagebreaks are announced as such. Subtitle gets a "level 5" in Chrome (which is a bit random, possibly a bug).

Somebody should probably do deeper research than that.

In any case "close to non-existent" seems incorrect. The landmarks strike me as potential footgun: in long form content, I can easily add a dozen landmarks via DPUB - which might negatively impact users.
