An implementation is attached that copies from the HSQL example. The only slightly quirky thinkg about it is the apparent need in Derby to have a dummy column in addtion to the auto-increment column (I called it "DUMMY"). Any better ideas?

Thomas: you did this already right? What about adding a Sybase version, or genericising the existing table-based incrementers? It seems there are platform-dependent ways to retrieve the last key - apparently with Sybase it is "SELECT @@IDENTITY".

Indeed, we have a DerbyMaxValueIncrementer since 2.5. Adding a SybaseMaxValueIncrementer would be fine as well, of course...
