Safari 5.1 Type Error Undefined Function Line 2

My socket.io application works on the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox. On Safari 5.1, though, during application load I get this error: TypeError: 'undefined' is not a function (evaluating 'j.open("GET",g)'), from line 2 of socket.io.min.js for socket.io-client.

The version is 1.0.17 for socket.io and socket.io.client

Note: I posted this earlier, and accidentally closed the issue. So I'm reposting it.

Apparently npm -version doesn't work as one might expect. The version of socket.io-client is: 0.7.5.

The error is: Line 2, TypeError: 'undefined' is not a function (evaluating 'j.open("GET",g,!0)')

If you disable minifcation, does it work again?

Without minification, I get the following error: [Line 1617] TypeError: 'undefined' is not a function (evaluating 'xhr.open('GET', url, true)')

Hmz, I just ran out whole test suite again on Safari Version 5.1 (7534.48.3) but I'm unable to reproduce this issue. Could you please post a minimal reproducible test case?

Also are you behind a firewall, have anti virus installed or some extensions in Safari?

Hi,

My JS client connects to a node.js server via socket.io: var socket = io.connect('http://localhost', { port: 8079 });

The same client works on the very latest version of Firefox and Chrome.

I'm running Safari 5.1 (6535.50), according the 'about' dialog.

I am running the following extensions:

1. Firebug Lite for Safari 1.2
2. BetterSource 1.0
3. SafariRestore 5.0.1

I just removed BetterSource; but still get the same error.

Turn off firebug lite, it messes with the build in xhr object.

I uninstalled Firebug and all other extensions. I still can't connect to the node.js server via socket.io. Of course, I can't debug the issue anymore.;)

It's not a mission critical bug for me. And few people use Safari. I was just surprised that it happens with WebKit.

@javawerks safari has a build in debugger.. The same as chrome uses so there is really no need for firebug light in the first place.

Safari Preferences > Advanced > Show develop menu

Nice. I forgot all about it. I actually had it turned on. I principally work with Chrome, and then Firefox.

Got the same error with all extensions uninstalled.

Hmz, I'll just leave it open and mark it as unable to reproduce so someone else can look at it. Because i really have no way of reproducing this.

No worries. Thanks for looking into it. For some reason socket.io can't connect to a target url --- within Safari.
