webpack takes ~25 seconds to build

When I run yarn build:production, it takes about 25 seconds to finish. This is wayyyy too long to be able to iteratively develop on the theme. Am I doing something wrong here?

I am on WSL on Windows 10.

For me it takes around 1 to 2 seconds (on linux). I checked that it was not too long when added it to the git commit hook, as I agree that otherwise it is very annoying for development.

Can you check it outside the WSL?

I just installed yarn/webpack with anaconda on windows (my base OS). It took 6 seconds to run yarn build:production and 25 seconds when I switched to WSL and re-ran it.

6 seconds is still pretty long IMO, considering you then have to follow it up with make html

Hi @choldgraf, I started installing the theme in my own WSL setup. But when running make html I get this error. When doing this on my macos setup (clean setup) it works as expected.

This is the output, am I missing something?

Thank you @jorisvandenbossche . I installed the dependencies via Conda, but that was not sufficient. pip install --editable . was missing.

I'm having a hard time to reproduce the slowness of yarn build:dev. I installed yarn via conda. When I run yarn build:dev and update this line to a different color, the browser after 1 second serenaders with the new color. This is not case for you @choldgraf ?

I am running these versions:

yarn: 1.22.4
node: 11.14.0

In a far memory I once noticed that running WSL with the files inside the Linux system caused problems. I have my repository in the Windows filesystem and navigate to them via /mnt/c/....

hmm, maybe it is something with my setup then? I just conda install-ed node+yarn from scratch...but perhaps it's something to do with the filesystem setup on my machine

Can you confirm the versions of yarn and node? Maybe I can try the exact version to reproduce the situation?

$ yarn --version
  1.22.4

Though I suspect that it is because of file I/O slowness. In my experience with WSL, the creation or moving lots and lots of files has a huge performance penalty, and I bet that this is precisely what we're doing with yarn...

Just for completeness, Is the code repository located in the Windows or Linux (WSL) file structure?
