air format doesn't work on Quarto (qmd) files

Hi,

I was trying air format and I noticed that I cannot use it with qmd files.

I tried this, but the message isn't informative.

$ air format --log-level trace file.qmd

Trace Initialized logging
TRACE Included file due to explicit provision "/my/path/file.qmd"
ERROR Failed to format file.qmd: Failed to parse due to syntax errors.

Please let me know if I can debug further what happened with this file.

Unfortunately this is not supported and we don't plan to add support for this in the short term. That's probably outside the scope of Air. Quarto would need its own formatter configured to call language-specific formatters for the chunk ranges.

FWIW if you use VS Code (and soon, Positron) and open a quarto document in Source Mode then Format on Save will propagate to R cells in the document, i.e. follow the setup here https://posit-dev.github.io/air/editor-vscode.html#quarto

But yea from the CLI it won't work. What I mention here is a Quarto VS Code feature, not specific to Air

Thanks for the tip. I use Emacs, but I'll check how to use it in VS Code.
