Can you limit your pull to the rel_to and smart_str stuff. I've made most of these changes except the rel_to. Thats new to me. |

Thanks for providing this wonderful package.
This pull request contains the modification I had to make to upgrade my server from Ubuntu 17.04 / Django 1.11 to Ubuntu 20.04 / Django 3.1.
These changes are not backwards compatible, so they probably can't be incorporated into master, but maybe they can still be useful.
Also, I would be willing to test for different versions of Django. Do you have automated tests or something similar available?
