I think you're asking for a sample of using .NET Core SignalR on a non-ASP.NET Core app? Is that right?

Can you confirm @Rick-Anderson's question? the TL/DR is one must choose if they want the ASP.NET SignalR or ASP.NET Core SignalR. The two are not interchangeable.

To clarify:

I spent the last 4 hours putting together a working proof of concept for utilizing Azure SignalR for two-way communication between an .NET Core 3.1 Azure Function (using Azure SignalR REST API only) and a .NET Core 3.1 console application.

I found a bunch of useless examples everywhere using obsolete versions of a lot of differente packages and/or targeting .NET Framework which I don't care about. I also don't care about ASP.NET (in any form) since I'm running plain azure functions without all the startup bs.

I also don't care about magic "bindings" in the azure functions runtime because afaik those are not supported in the out of process model for .NET 5.

So I needed plain simple examples showing REST API usage for SignalR server, and the official, current nuget package for the client. I there was such an example I'd saved 5 hours of time and I wouldn't be writing this at 2 AM.

This sounds like something specific to Azure SignalR Service, but I do wonder if @davidfowl agrees there's merit to us having an article in the SignalR client docs specific to "things you can do with the client when your back-end is the Azure SignalR Service." Thoughts, Fowler?

We should link to azure docs but they shouldn't be on here
