+It’s critical for engineering teams to build a culture of continuous improvement, where an expectation of reliability is baked in from the beginning. To do this, it’s important to first assess the current state by measuring development maturity, operational readiness, & operational maturity. Once you have an understanding of where your services fall, you can define paths to improvement to focus on first. By re-assessing every few months and setting new targets, you can create a culture of ownership & reliability.

+During this talk, I’ll go over what development maturity, operational readiness, and operational maturity are as well as the key similarities and differences between them. I’ll highlight the importance of measuring them to assess the health of existing platforms and give examples of how to measure each one. I’ll bring it all together with tactics for creating team-wide initiatives that’ll help create a culture of change.

+Accurately attributing cloud costs has become a Sisyphean task many companies face. As both the cloud and your systems evolve, it's hard to figure out what exactly is eating up all that money, let alone optimize those costs. In this session, we'll take you over the journey that got us to trustworthy cost estimations at Grafana Labs.

+You'll get to see how we started, with just the metrics collected from kube-state-metrics and stored within prometheus, and how and why we eventually moved on to the CNCF incubating project opencost, which allowed us to measure the costs of our Grafana Cloud platform across three major cloud service providers.

+Measuring the trends in costs for k8s is easy to get started with. If you're operating a k8s cluster and collecting metrics from kube-state-metrics, you likely already collect enough metrics. Keeping an eye on this and being able to alert on cost changes will allow you to mitigate shock bills in cloud providers. Even using estimated costs can get within 90% accuracy!

+Cristina is a Founding Engineer at Cortex, an internal developer portal that enables engineering teams to drive adoption of developer best practices, funded by IVP, Sequoia Capital, and YCombinator. Prior to joining Cortex, Cristina led an engineering team at Bridgewater Associates, where she developed a portfolio analytics platform for the largest institutional investors in the world. In her free time, she loves to find cool restaurants and try to remake their recipes, learn about natural wines, and dance to Colombian music.
