Replacing third party libs

Can I simply replace the third-party libs with the latest versions? Or are there any restrictions that need to be observed?
Current expat 2.6.4
with settings the new define XML_GE to zero
Current zlib 1.3.1

Hey, you got any update on this? Have you tried doing this? We are facing a similar issue of vulnerability due to zlib and expat old versions in Dec2023 release for Adobe XMP.
