Seems this fix makes the most sense so that regardless of interrupt behavior things work as expected. |

Fixes #1804
This is one approach to fixing #1804 that still works with the unit tests that
takehad been changed for originally.Still not sure if we should change the default behavior though to not interrupt a thread.
