It took me a very long time to debug why windows build tools were not working for node-gyp after I installed them via the nodejs installation manager on Windows (and then also independently tried to install via Visual Studio Installer). If your username on Windows has an apostrophe in the name (i.e. like mine does), it will fail in finding one of the additional library dependencies (atls.lib) when node-gyp attempts to run. The error message for this really doesn't help people determine the root cause.
While it's a small % of population that have apostrophes in their names, it would also only take a couple lines of code to check for this in the filepaths and return a much more understandable error. And yes, if you stumble upon this, I had to create a new Windows account without the apostrophe in my name to make it work. But it worked very cleanly after that!
Thanks in advance for your consideration. Cheers, John D'Amore....no wait it's now...John DAmore
