Popup / custom select focus issues

On Android 4.1 native browser you briefly see a blue glow (a box with the size of the popup, indicating focus) before the custom selectmenu is shown, or on top of the selectmenu.
Also, often it's not the first item in the selectmenu that gets focus but no item at all or the third item.
