gh-pages branch is huge

This repo is huge, likely because we are storing the history of the docs in the gh-pages branch. Can we remove all that history? Is gh-pages still the right way to manage GitHub Pages doc deployments?

It's not just the history. Each previous release is also pretty big and we have all those. looks like the most recent ones are about 90 MB each so it adds up.
