Creating a branch on top of another user's branch makes it no longer protected

This came up in #230 and isn't good.

Version

v0.8.2

Steps to reproduce

Check out another users branch
Create a branch on top of it

Actual Behaviour

The user's branch is no longer protected

Expected Behaviour

The branch is still protected but my own branch is not
