I encountered this method when working on eea7333. It took me a moment to understand its behavior, so I thought it would be nice to clarify the code.

(My apologies if cosmetic changes are frowned upon!)

@mullermp I do not see this on master. Did you mean this has been merged into some other branch?

To clarify: this PR is a follow-up to #2137; it was not included in it.
