Support core WordPress features by default

There are a few things available to WordPress admins that, if used, would not result in the behavior that the admin would probably expect. Here's a non-comprehensive list:

• Featured images can be set, but the images aren't shown anywhere
• The "Discussion" section with comments/pingbacks shows up for pages and posts, but checking the boxes doesn't change any behavior
• Widgets added by admins appear under the footer (the wp_footer) area, seems like), but there are no other slots to add widgets/blocks
• It's unclear how to use custom taxonomies and whether they're working correctly
