Seems to at least work and probably fixes the issue where several portals are auto-created when several users are invited to the room at once. I suppose that in general executing invites sequentially for a given room/group is less error-prone and probably doesn't cause any noticeable delays.
It's not a complicated PR, so I suppose you'll be able to judge whether it's sufficient to fix the problem or whether there are better solutions.
