This would be an improvement over the current hostname + port since it allows copy-pasting the address from the IPFS daemon config. I've technically already started implementing this, but got “sidetracked” by fixing the requisite library (https://github.com/multiformats/py-multiaddr) used for this. However, all the technical debt on that library has now been cleared and it should almost be ready for release after a few small patches for convenience of use have been incorporated.
